ATH-SJ5
- Aesthetics, Build, & Comfort
The SJ5 is definitely a looker with its stylish design. The outer part of the earcups use hard plastic surface. It's a nice, simplistic headband design that also looks good on the head. Easily worn in public, I don't think anyone would laugh at it. I am much prefer this style over K81DJ style.
There's "lock-step" mechanism to adjust the fit of the headband. Unlike K26P in which the headbands use a click-free slider design that allows you to "pull" them down as you put the headphone on.
Materials are a combination of hard plastic and aluminum that will allow it to survive easy beatings. The headband is the sturdiest part on it with the arms not as much, but they're fairly inflexible on their own. Even with that, the arms still feel like you could break them off if you tried, as they have a hinge-y feel to them.
The earpads are made of pleather and provide a nice fit onto the ear. The earcups are larger than normal for a portable headphone, and will, for most standard ear sizes, be fully supra-aural. Not much pressure will be exerted on the ear, unlike K26p which exert great amount of pressure is all along the rim of the ear, which it could explain why K26p's isolation might be much better.
Due to the larger-than-normal earcups/earpads, since I have only experienced K26p, SJ5 is so much comfortable to wear. Can be worn easily for hours at a time without needing to take them off. Aside from the issue that pleather sticks, of course.
- Sound Quality
overall, Bass and Mids are the strongest point of SJ5
Bass is solid and not overly exaggerated or booming. moreover, bass is tight and controlled, It bangs, bops, and booms just like any subwoofer would, only without nearly as much power & authority of course.
Mids are very clear and detailed, just like usual A-T signature and very close to the Ck7. It's very easy-to-listen, pleasant presentation.
There's definately either treble roll-off or recess highs, to me, all the high-pitch instruments seems have turn down a few notches on the volume, but remain very detailed and clearity.
The impedance is rated at 32 ohms and indeed it's easy to drive. It can easily be directly driven from any DAP or PCDP without the need for an amp.
- Portability
The SJ5 folds up, and folds flat like grado. making it very convenient to transport. It does not come with a carrying case.
overall, I like it, and I prefer this over K81Dj.
